Description
Sodium Coco-Sulfate (SCS) is the sodium salt of the sulfate ester of coconut alcohol. It is a surfactant which means that it makes foam and cleanses the skin and hair. A fine noodle form of this anionic surfactant is the most common form. Its primary purpose is to serve as the foamer in topical personal cleansing products. It is a salt of fatty alcohols bound to a sulfate group and belongs to the family of compounds called alkyl sulfates. Coconut oil is the source of fatty alcohols for those ingredients with Coco in the name.
Sodium coco sulfate noodles are a solid, naturally derived surfactant made from coconut oil that is used as a foaming and cleansing agent in personal care products like shampoos and soaps. The noodle form is easy to handle, but it requires melting in water (which can take 10-15 minutes) and has a relatively high pH, so products made with it may need a pH adjuster. When heated, SCS noodles can irritate the skin and respiratory tract in their pure form, so wearing a dust mask is recommended during handling.
What it is: A surfactant (a cleaning and foaming agent) derived from coconut oil.It is the anionic salt of sulfuric acid with fatty alcohols from coconut oil.It comes in a solid noodle or needle form that is easier to handle than powder. It is used as a high-performance alternative to synthetic sulfates in products like shampoo bars, body wash, and liquid soap.
Foam: It produces a dense, creamy lather and is excellent for personal cleansing products.
INGREDIENT INFORMATION
INCI: Sodium Coco Sulfate
CAS No: 68647-73-4
Percentage Purity: 70% – 100% (cosmetic grade)
Appearance: White to off-white solid noodles/flakes
Recommended Usage Rate: 5% – 60% (depending on whether the product is solid or liquid)
Solubility: Water-soluble
Stable pH Range: 5.0 – 9.0
Heat Sensitivity: Stable under normal processing conditions
MIXING METHOD
-
Add to the water phase and allow to dissolve fully
-
Can be used in both heated and cold-process surfactant systems
-
Ideal for solid shampoo bars and other foaming cleansing products
Dissolving: Melt the noodles in water, which can take 10-15 minutes. Using water around \(40^{\circ }C\) (\(104^{\circ }F\)) is recommended to avoid clumping.Safety: Wear a dust mask when handling the dry noodles, as they can be irritating to the respiratory tract and skin.
Formulating: The water used to dissolve the noodles can be subtracted from the total water in your recipe. The resulting mixture should be added to your formulation.
Important considerations
pH level: A 1% solution has a pH between \(7.5\) and \(10.5\), and products often need a pH adjuster like a citric acid solution.
Irritation: It is a stronger surfactant than some alternatives and may cause irritation for those with very sensitive skin.
PACKAGING
Our surfactant noodles are packed in waterproof zip-lock pouches to prevent spillage and maintain quality.
