Fenugreek seed whole is a spice that we do not encounter very often in Dutch kitchens. Yet there are many ways to use it. The spice, which originates from the Mediterranean region, is now mainly used in India. Fenugreek seed whole is therefore one of the herbs that is essential when preparing a traditional curry.

THE TASTE OF FENUGREEK SEED WHOLE

Fenugreek seed whole has a taste that cannot be compared to any other herb. It tastes spicy, bitter and slightly nutty. The taste is also compared to a combination of fennel and celery. The aftertaste somewhat resembles mustard. The aroma is reminiscent of the smell of fresh hay. The spice is also called Greek hay. The ancient Greeks mixed it with hay because it gave their horses a shiny coat and had a good influence on their muscular strength.

Although fenugreek seeds are very common in Indian cuisine, that does not of course mean that they are limited to that. Fenugreek seed whole has several health benefits. For example, it is rich in various minerals such as iron and copper. Because of the many fibres the seeds contain, it also has a regulating effect on blood sugar levels. It has an anti-inflammatory effect too. And there are a lot of vitamins in the seed, especially B3, B6 and B11. However, side effects are known from overdose or misuse. So be a bit frugal. Pregnant women should explicitly not use phengric seeds.
