Description
Ceteareth-20 is a non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier commonly used in cosmetics to bind oil and water, stabilize products, and improve texture. It is made from cetearyl alcohol and 20 molecules of ethylene oxide, making it a versatile ingredient in products like moisturizers, conditioners, and cleansers. Its function as an emulsifier creates stable oil-in-water mixtures with a smooth, creamy texture.
What it is
Ceteareth-20 is a polyethylene glycol ether of cetearyl alcohol.
It is produced through a process called ethoxylation, where cetearyl alcohol reacts with 20 moles of ethylene oxide.
The number “20” in the name indicates the average number of ethylene oxide units added to the molecule.
What it does
Emulsifier: It is a key emulsifying agent that allows oil and water to mix and remain combined, preventing separation in products like lotions and creams.
Surfactant: It acts as a cleansing agent by reducing the surface tension of water, helping to wash away dirt and oil from the skin and hair.
Thickener: It can add thickness and body to cosmetic formulations, improving their consistency.
Emollient: It helps to soften and condition the skin and hair.
Stabilizer: It helps stabilize dispersed systems and can enhance the permeability of active ingredients into the skin.
Where it is used
Skin care: Lotions, creams, moisturizers, facial cleansers, and sunscreens.
Hair care: Conditioners, shampoos, and hair dyes.
Other cosmetics: Makeup foundations, depilatory creams, and exfoliants.
