Description
Urea is a byproduct of protein metabolism and a normal metabolic constituent in biological organisms. It is a naturally occurring compound, appearing in our urine and that of all mammals, but it is manufactured synthetically on a large scale worldwide as it is used in many industrial processes.
With its ability to disrupt the noncovalent bonds in proteins, urea can be a powerful protein denaturant. This keratolytic property can be exploited in topical preparations containing high amounts of urea where it is used to help with the rapid turnover of skin cells leading to the improvement of dry scaly skin.
Urea is both a humectant and moisturizer that promotes rehydration of the skin and helps to replenish natural urea content of the skin lost with cleansing. While the mechanism of action remains unclear, Urea, applied topically, acts as an anti-inflammatory agent on dermatalogically compromised skin.
One of the first uses of urea in modern medicine was the topical treatment of wounds due to its proteolytic and antibacterial properties. At present, urea is widely used in dermatology to improve skin barrier function and as one of the most common moisturizers and keratolytic agents.
Urea helps improve the appearance of patches of dry, rough, scaly skin in two ways: by providing hydration to smooth your skin’s texture, and by helping to reduce the buildup of dead skin cells.
BENEFITS:
– breaking down the outer layer of skin to promote new cell growth.
– moisturizing skin cells
– soothing irritation
– increasing how deeply products penetrate the skin.
– replenishes natural urea content in skin after cleansing (avoid dryness)
– keratolytic Properties (skin-exfoliating) at higher concentration.
– has purifying and deodorizing effects.
