Description
Snail Extract Filtrate (Liquid) is an excretion from the snail. It can often be referred to as snail slime and may be labeled as snail secretion filtrate on ingredient lists, it’s made up of properties like glycoproteins, hyaluronic acid and glycolic acid, all of which have long-documented benefits for the skin. snail mucin for skin care originated with the Chileans. In the 1980’s Chileans snail breeders found their hands to be very soft after handling the snails, leading to the Chilean snail cream. So snail slime is the secretion of Cornu Aspersum, the garden snail.
snail mucopolysaccharide, commonly called burr, is a secretion produced by glands located at the snail’s foot. snail slime is a complex mixture of proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans, glycoprotein enzymes, hyaluronic acid, copper peptides, antimicrobial peptides and trace elements including copper, zinc, and iron.
Extraction, or deburring, of this material from the animal is carried out under conditions of adequate temperature and humidity, without the addition of salt or other chemical substances. Deburring occurs manually using food-grade containers and a stainless-steel device operated by hand that simulates stimulation. This manipulation does not affect the animal’s quality of life, thus achieving an optimal result both for the production yield of burrs per unit in kg of treated snails and, due to the absence of damage and stress, and ensuring most survive.
The collected snail slime passes through various stages of filtration, initially to remove residues and to clean it. It then is passed through -grade filters to completely remove bacteria before it is subjected to microbiology control both before and after the addition of preservative. After due diligence checks, the burr is stabilized using a natural and Ecocert-approved preservative.
Snail mucin is becoming increasingly popular for its wide range of ingredients and potential benefits. Snail extract’s widespread appearance in cosmetic formulations encourages an investigation into the medical and cosmetic benefits. The therapeutic use of snail mucin in medical fields has been studied as antimicrobial agents, drug delivery vehicles, antitumor agents, wound healing agents, and biomaterial coatings among others. Additionally, the use in cosmetic fields includes antiaging, hydrating, anti-acne, scarring, and hyperpigmentation treatments.
The composition of snail mucin having multiple trusted skincare ingredients such as growth factors, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid, made for an easy transition of snail mucin into skincare. One other ingredients found in snail mucin include glycosaminoglycans, glycoproteins, allantoin, glycolic acid, lactic acid, collagen, and elastin. This makes snail mucin an incredibly unique natural product, offering a rare combination of ingredients not found in nature otherwise.
Snail mucin has existed globally for centuries dating back to Ancient Greece, where Hippocrates mentioned its use in relieving inflamed skin. Historic records also note Chilean snail farmers found snail mucin to help heal skin lesions without scarring, and the Han Dynasty in China documented its use in children’s tetanus, insect bites, and hemorrhoids. 4-6 Throughout time, numerous functions have been proposed for snail mucin and extract including antimicrobial agents, drug delivery vehicles, antitumor agents, wound healing agents, biomaterial coatings, and antiaging and anti-acne skincare.
In Skin care: Different components of snail secretion filtrate offer various skin benefits. While glycolic acids help to exfoliate the skin and brighten its appearance, proteins aid in the repair and regeneration of skin cells. And in the meantime, hyaluronic acid is a potent hydrator that can help to hydrate the skin and lessen the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles.
Using specialized equipment, for cosmetic use, the snail secretion is produced, filtered, and micro-filtered to remove any type of impurities, without diluting the secretion other than the addition of stabilizers to ensure its preservation over time.
