Description
Malic Acid (AHA – Alpha Hydroxy Acid)
Malic Acid is a naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) found in fruits like apples and cherries. It is used in cosmetics and personal care products for its gentle exfoliating, hydrating, and pH-adjusting properties. Milder than glycolic or lactic acid, malic acid provides a gradual, surface-level exfoliation, making it suitable for sensitive or dry skin and layered acid formulations.
BENEFITS OF USING MALIC ACID:
-
Exfoliates dead skin cells for smoother, brighter skin
-
Improves skin hydration by enhancing natural moisturising factor (NMF) production
-
Refines texture and tone with low irritation risk
-
Promotes gentle cell turnover for more radiant skin
-
Helps clear clogged pores and reduce blemishes
-
Functions as a pH adjuster in acidic formulations
-
Pairs well with other AHAs and BHAs for synergistic exfoliation
INCI: Malic Acid
CAS No.: 6915-15-7
Appearance: White crystalline powder
Solubility: Soluble in water and alcohol
Recommended Usage Rate: 0.5–5% (in exfoliants or pH adjustments)
pH Range for Activity: 3.0–4.5
Charge Type: Anionic (acidic compound)
FORMULATION TIP:
-
Dissolve in water phase (warm or room temperature) before emulsification.
-
Works best in low pH formulations—combine with glycolic or lactic acid for broader exfoliation spectrum.
-
Can be used as a pH adjuster in AHA-based products.
-
Use with chelating agents (e.g., EDTA) if needed to stabilize in the presence of metal ions.
-
Best added during the cool-down phase if formulating with heat-sensitive ingredients.
APPLICATIONS:
-
Exfoliating toners and peels
-
Brightening masks and serums
-
Anti-aging creams and gels
-
Acne treatment products
-
Scalp exfoliants and hair tonics
-
Foot scrubs and callus softening products
PRECAUTIONS:
-
For external use only
-
May cause mild stinging or irritation—patch test recommended
-
Use broad-spectrum SPF during use, as AHAs increase sun sensitivity
-
Store in a cool, dry place, sealed tightly to avoid moisture exposure
-
Check regional regulations for maximum allowable use in leave-on vs. rinse-off products
Malic Acid offers a balanced approach to exfoliation—strong enough to visibly improve skin texture, yet gentle enough for sensitive formulations. Its ability to hydrate while refining makes it a valuable addition to glow-enhancing and anti-aging cosmetic lines.
