Description

BENZOYL PEROXIDE is a Colorless to white crystals or a granular powder with a faint, benzaldehyde-like odor. Benzoyl peroxide powder is “an organic peroxide that acts as a nonspecific oxidizing agent,” it’s a chemical compound that, through oxidizing activity on the skin, can help treat acne.

Benzoyl Peroxide is a peroxide with antibacterial, irritant, keratolytic, comedolytic, and anti-inflammatory activity. Upon topical application, benzoyl peroxide decomposes to release oxygen which is lethal to the bacteria Proprionibacterium acnes. Due to its irritant effect, benzoyl peroxide increases the turnover rate of epithelial cells, thereby peeling the skin and promoting the resolution of comedones. Benzoyl peroxide is used in the treatment of acne vulgaris.

Uses of benzoyl peroxide:
Benzoyl peroxide products are usually used to treat mild to moderate acne. When used to treat acne, benzoyl peroxide works by reducing the amount of acne-causing bacteria and by causing the skin to dry and peel. Some brands are used to treat a certain skin condition called rosacea. Benzoyl peroxide may help to decrease symptoms caused by rosacea, such as pimples and bumps on the face.

Applications: face cleansers, scrubs, masks, spot treatments , and other types of leave-on creams

Precaution: since benzoyl peroxide can cause irritation in the form of redness and extra-dry skin, those with sensitive skin are advised to use BPO-containing products with the lowest concentrations, if not avoid them altogether.
