Description
Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂)
Physical UV Filter • Whitening Agent • Opacifier
Titanium Dioxide is a naturally occurring mineral-based compound widely used in cosmetics as a physical (inorganic) UV filter, white pigment, and opacifying agent. It provides effective broad-spectrum sun protection, especially UVB and short-wave UVA (280–350 nm), by scattering and reflecting ultraviolet rays.
Depending on particle size, TiO₂ is either used for sun protection (micronized/nano) or pigmentation and coverage (non-nano) in products like sunscreens, foundations, creams, powders, and lotions.
BENEFITS OF USING TITANIUM DIOXIDE IN COSMETICS:
-
Provides mineral-based sun protection (broad-spectrum, photostable)
-
Non-irritating and non-comedogenic – ideal for sensitive skin and baby products
-
Acts as a whitening and brightening pigment in creams, makeup, and soaps
-
Improves product opacity and coverage
-
Photostable and inert – does not degrade under sunlight
-
Can be used in natural and clean beauty formulations

FORMULATION TIPS:
-
Disperse thoroughly in water or oil with the aid of dispersants or emulsifiers
-
For UV protection, use micronized or coated titanium dioxide to reduce whitening
-
Combine with Zinc Oxide for full UVA/UVB protection
-
Use antioxidants (e.g., Vitamin E) to boost formula stability
-
May require suspending agents in liquids to prevent settling
-
Avoid using untreated TiO₂ in water-based products without stabilizers—may clump
APPLICATIONS:
-
Mineral sunscreens (creams, lotions, sticks)
-
BB creams, foundations, and primers
-
Whitening and fairness creams
-
Lip balms and baby care
-
Soap bars, powders, and pressed makeup
-
Nail polishes and depilatory creams
PRECAUTIONS:
-
For external use only
-
Avoid inhalation of loose powder (especially in spray/powder formulations)
-
Comply with nano-material labeling requirements where applicable
-
Store in a cool, dry place, tightly sealed and protected from moisture
-
Regulatory limits vary—always check local guidelines (e.g., EU, FDA, ASEAN)
