Description
Salicylic Acid is a naturally derived beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) with oil-soluble properties, making it highly effective in penetrating clogged pores, dissolving sebum, and exfoliating from within. Known for its keratolytic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial benefits, it is a gold-standard ingredient in formulations targeting acne, blackheads, oily skin, and rough texture.
BENEFITS OF USING SALICYLIC ACID:
-
Deeply exfoliates inside pores to remove dirt, oil, and dead skin
-
Unclogs and tightens pores, reducing acne and blackheads
-
Regulates sebum production, ideal for oily and combination skin
-
Improves texture and smoothness by shedding excess keratin buildup
-
Soothes inflammation and calms irritated skin
-
Helps reduce the appearance of blemishes and post-acne marks
-
Enhances penetration of other active ingredients
INCI: Salicylic Acid
CAS No.: 69-72-7
Appearance: Fine, white crystalline powder
Solubility: Oil-soluble (soluble in alcohol, oils, glycols; not water-soluble)
Recommended Usage Rate: 0.5–2% (max allowed in leave-on OTC in most regions)
pH Range for Activity: 3.0–4.0 (needs acidic environment for best efficacy)
Charge Type: Neutral molecule
FORMULATION TIP:
-
Pre-dissolve salicylic acid in solvents like propylene glycol, butylene glycol, caprylic/capric triglycerides, or ethanol before adding to formulations.
-
Add during cool-down phase to prevent degradation.
-
Must be formulated at a pH below 4 for optimal exfoliating activity. Use citric acid or lactic acid for pH adjustment if needed.
-
Works well in combination with niacinamide, azelaic acid, zinc, and clay-based actives.
-
In emulsions, it should be included in the oil phase or added post-emulsification, depending on solubilizer used.
APPLICATIONS:
-
Acne serums and spot treatments
-
Clarifying toners and exfoliating pads
-
Pore-minimizing facial cleansers
-
Leave-on lotions and creams for oily or rough skin
-
Scalp treatments for dandruff and oil control
-
Foot care and callus-softening products
PRECAUTIONS:
-
For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, broken skin, or mucous membranes
-
May cause dryness or irritation—patch test recommended, especially for sensitive skin
-
Not suitable for children under 3; use sunscreen during daytime use as BHA increases sun sensitivity
-
Store in a cool, dry place, tightly sealed, away from moisture and light
-
Regulatory limits may apply—check regional guidelines (e.g., EU max 2% in rinse-off, 0.5–2% in leave-on for acne treatment)
