Description
Description
Astaxanthin is most often extracted from the marine microalgae haematococcus pluvialis, the richest known source for this natural pigment. The extraction is the added to a base oil such as sunflower seed oil or argan oil. Cosmetic solutions range from 1 – 5% in a base. Astaxanthin has superb antioxidant properties. Its antioxidant potential has been reported to be is 550 times more effective than vitamin E, and it prevents UVA induced skin cancer. Furthermore, astaxanthin protects the skin from dangerous free radicals and reduce wrinkle & freckles.
Astaxanthin is rich in Carotenoids, also known as Vitamin A, it is a strong antioxidant in eliminating free radicals that cause premature aging.
Astaxanthin is considered a powerful natural source of Vitamin A. Astaxanthin helps to fight against aging, diminish fine lines and wrinkles, firm and tone the skin, protect the skin from pollution and damaging effects of free radicals and prevent development of photoaging.
Source
Astaxanthin is primarily produced from Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae, the richest natural source. The algae are cultivated in controlled environments under optimal light, temperature, and nutrient conditions. Once the algae reach maturity, they undergo a stress-induced phase, like exposure to high UV light, causing them to produce astaxanthin as a protective mechanism. The algae are then harvested and processed using supercritical COâ‚‚ extraction or solvent-based methods to isolate astaxanthin in its pure form, which is then refined for use in cosmetics.
It is a powerful, fat-soluble antioxidant that is many times more effective than Vitamin E, it increases skin moisture, moisture retention and elasticity. The skin becomes smoother, fine lines and wrinkles are reduced. It also has natural UV blocking properties that help protect the skin from sun-related damage such as dark spots on the skin.
Carotenoids tend to be antioxidants and UV protectors. It is this red pigment that gives the pink color to shrimp, krill, salmon, red trout, crabs, and lobsters, who eat the algae and then absorb the astaxanthin.
Enhances scalp health by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. It protects hair from environmental damage, strengthens hair follicles, and promotes healthier, shinier strands. By improving scalp circulation and reducing UV damage, astaxanthin helps prevent hair thinning and breakage, making it a valuable addition to hair care products
Antioxidant Function
During cellular metabolism, several environmental factors such as pollution, UV light, smoke and even oxygen create damaging by products called free radicals. Free radicals are a major contributor to aging. They build up in the skin and cause the lipid peroxidation in the stratum corneum. This creates a compromise to the natural barrier function of the skin, Excess Reactive Oxygen Species (Free radicals) can break down the collagen matrix, which in turn leads to wrinkle formation and the loss of elsticity. Anti-oxidants are scavengers of free radicals – they bind themselves to the free radicals before they can do any damage. Oil soluble antioxidants effectively bind themselves to the skins natural oils and prevent oxidative aging.
In penetrating the skin and protecting each dermal layer from ROS-related damage, astaxanthin helps reduce moisture loss, promote smoothness, and elicit cellular renewal.
A clinical research study by Dr. Debasis Bagchi at Creighton University demonstrated that astaxanthin can eliminate free radicals 6,000 times more effectively than vitamin C, 800 times more than CoQ10, 550 times more than vitamin E and green tea, 75 times more than Alpha Lipoic Acid, and 20 times more than beta-carotene.
