Description
Sodium Metabisulfite or sodium pyrosulfite is mostly known as inorganic salt used as a disinfectant and preservative agent in cosmetics and personal care products. It is also considered a reducing agent that donates hydrogen molecules to other substances in cosmetics and personal care products. This ingredient can sometimes function as an antioxidant, preventing or slowing deterioration of formulas caused by chemical reactions with oxygen. The substance is sometimes referred to as disodium metabisulfite. When dissolved in water it forms sodium bisulfite.
Sodium Metabisulfite is seen as an ingredient primarily in hair care products, such as formulas for permanent waves, hair bleaches, hair dyes, colors and tints, and also in some bath and skincare products.
Sodium metabisulfite helps to prevent the formulations from going bad and losing their effectiveness by protecting them from the damaging effects of oxygen.
Sodium metabisulfite is also used to improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation on the skin, remove excess hair color, and prevent discoloration caused by chlorine. It appears as a white crystalline powder and has a sulfur-like odor. With chemical formula Na2S2O5.
What does SODIUM METABISULFITE do in a formulation?

What is SODIUM METABISULFITE used for?
Sodium metabisulfite is quite a versatile ingredient that finds many applications in the world of personal care and cosmetics. It can be found in a range of products like hair dyes, shampoos, sunscreens, concealers, etc.
Skin care: It works to improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation and dark spots. It is also anti-aging and prevents damage caused by free radicals. The antimicrobial properties of Sodium metabisulfite can further inhibit the growth of acne-causing bacteria on the skin.
Hair care: It is known to have conditioning properties that can help to improve the overall health of the hair. It helps to strengthen the hair and prevent damage caused by environmental stressors. Sodium metabisulfite is also used in hair straightening treatments to break down the protein bonds in the hair, allowing it to be reshaped and straightened.
Cosmetic products: It prevents the oxidation of cosmetic ingredients, such as oils and fats, which can lead to rancidity, off-odors, and changes in color. This preservative is particularly used in aqueous formulations, to prevent the growth of microorganisms that can spoil the product.
ORIGIN: Sodium metabisulfite is made by combining sodium carbonate and sulfur dioxide. The two compounds are reacted in a furnace at high temperatures, which produces sodium metabisulfite as a white crystalline powder. The resulting product is then purified and packaged for use.
