Description
Sodium lactate is Derived from the natural fermentation of sugars found in corn and beets, sodium lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid. Sodium lactate is commonly used in food products as a preservative. It’s also an extremely effective humectant, helping to strengthen the skin moisture barrier.
Sodium lactate is a naturally occurring salt derived from the popular ingredient Lactic Acid. Both of which are different ingredients, but provide similar skin benefits by locking moisture into the skin and contribute to the skin’s Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF) that helps keep the surface smooth, healthy and supple whilst maintaining optimal health and appearance.
sodium lactate can increase the moisture content within the skin by a minimum of 84% demonstrating that it is the 2nd most hydrating ingredient that can be used on its own or combined with other skincare ingredients. By balancing the pH levels it is able to take a formulation that is too acidic and too alkaline and make it range to a level between 4 to 6 preventing the protective barrier depleting and performing it’s daily function of protecting the skin from harmful pollutant.
It is found in the stratum corneum of the skin and is the most cost effective, naturally occurring humectant available for use as a moisturizer. Has slight skin-lightening effects. Useful to adjust pH. For bar soaps: hardens bar, reduces cracking, and increases moisture retention.
BENEFITS OF SODIUM LACTATE:
– Reduces irritation potentail and increases efficacy of Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids.
– Makes oils and butters less greasy and more moisturizing because it lengthens the carbon chain of oils
– Significantly increases and accelerates the action (particularly the skin lightening action) of Vitamin C and its derivatives.
– Antimicrobial action helps facilitate product preservation.
– In production of bar soaps, use of Sodium Lactate will result in bigger yield, faster cure times, and improved product aesthetics / performance.
– Having a very slick, emollient, almost oily feel, Sodium Lactate can be used to reduce tack and improve skin feel of aqueous systems in which oils or esters could not be used.
– Because of it’s water binding capacity and emollient feel, makes a fabulous component of salon “cutting lotions” or detanglers.
– Dramatically improved moisture content of skin even when utilized in rinse-off products.
