Description
Ghana black soap originated from West African, and is made with locally harvested African plants and dried peels, which gives the soap its characteristic brown to dark colour.
While the ingredients for black soap vary by region, they almost all contain water, roasted plaintain skin (or cacao pods in place where plantain is not native) palm oil, palm kernel oil or shea butter. These ingredients contain antioxidants and moisturizing properties that provide the soap with medicinal qualities for which its known.
African black soap is loaded with bacteria-fighting oils and phytochemicals found in plants, which contain cleansing and nourishing elements, making it suitable for nearly all skin types. Black soap helped reduce inflammation and skin irritations; soothe dry and irritated skin; and relieve dry patches, rashes, and red areas, and was most effective in ameliorating acne.
HOW BLACK SOAP IS MADE:
Traditionally, black soap is made by ash from the leaves and bark of local plants. Shea tree bark, plantain, palm leaves, and cocoa pods are sun dried, then put in a kettle to be roasted. To ensure proper color, texture, and smell, the temperature must be kept even and constant. Palm oil, coconut oil, Shea butter, cocoa pod powder, other oils, and water are added. The mixture must then be stirred for at least a day, then set and cured for two weeks.
Vitamin A, vitamin E, and iron are in black soap due to the plantain leaves, and the Shea butter content can offer modest UV protection. It is excellent for people with sensitive skin, for babies, and for the elderly.
