Description
Salicylic acid powder is a Beta Hydroxy. It is derived from willow bark. It clears away dead skin cells and other pore-clogging impurities from the surface of the skin. This means it can alleviate acne and it also helps other skincare products penetrate deeper, provides important anti-inflammatory benefits, smoothes, and softens the texture of the skin. It is a great exfoliator.
It is slightly soluble in water but dissolves when heated. Propylene glycol is a great solvent for salicylic powder. It can be added to lotions, face toners, cleanser, anti-dandruff products.
This is an organic Beta hydroxy acid which is only partially soluble in water (0.2-1.7% at 75degrees). It is 14% soluble in pure ethanol and 15-20% soluble in octyldodecanol. In propylene glycol 3-6%.

Uses:
Used in concentrations of 0.2-3%.
– For anti-acne 5% pH range: 4.0 to 5.5.
– For anti-dandruff 7.5% pH range: 5.5 to 6.5.
– For callus & wart removal 30% – 100% pH range: 3 to 3.5,
As a beta hydroxyl acid in skin care formulations 4 to 7.5% pH range: 4.0

Benefits:
Can be used for skin peels, anti-dandruff products, and in products for oily, acneic and/or blemished skin.
Formulating Tips: Salicylic acid can be very tricky to add into an emulsion formulation (A cream or lotion) as it is not that soluble in water or oils. One option is to neutralise it into sodium salicylate by reacting it with sodium bicarbonate. This will fizz in water until the reaction is complete, the salt is just as effective for the skin as the acid but has less solubility issues. Otherwise you can try dispersing it beforehand into a suitable solvent. Propylene Glycol and glycerine can help as can adding what is known as a hydrotrope (to improve solubility). Examples of this are urea and/ or Sodium Citrate.

Recommended Storage: Our powders should be stored in cool temperatures away from direct sunlight and moisture in an airtight container.
