Black seeds (sometimes called black cumin) are produced by the fruit of an ancient plant called N. Sativa. Native to Africa and Southwest Asia — but also grown in places such as the Mediterranean — these plants have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years.
Black seed oil contains a compound called thymoquinone. In an animal study, thymoquinone was shown to have antioxidant properties, while a human study showed anti-inflammatory effects.
Black seed oil (aka black seed oil, or nigella sativa oil) is known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Studies and anecdotal evidence indicates that it accelerates the speed in which wounds heal. It is said to be effective in treating auto-immune skin disorders including eczema and psoriasis.
Black seed oil absorbs quickly and is also highly recommended for inclusion in moisturisers and hair care products where emolliency, anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory support are desired.
For centuries it’s been used to treat rashes, psoriasis, and skin inflammation. Studies suggest that black seed oil may work just as well as benzoyl for acne.
